Early look into the hypocrisy of organized religion. Burt Lancaster was excellent as Elmer Gantry a traveling preacher with a wild streak. He joins forces with a serious Evangelist and takes her down as his past comes back to haunt him.
Great movie. Shirley Jones was a great as the tempter who almost lures him back to his evil ways. Sinclair Lewis wrote the original story. I really loved the reporter and his refusal to be "saved", yet his loyalty to the ones he comes to respect.
