Review of Elle (2016) by Carlos T — 23 Feb 2017
I do wonder what goes on in Paul Verhoeven's mind sometimes but other times I don't. His latest project is a reflection on a postfeminist woman caught in a game of cat and mouse with her rapist.
Here, Isabelle Huppert gives a stellar turn as Michele in a truly mesmerising performance. Huppert is at the centre of Verhoeven's piece and she shines in this power struggle story. There is a lot to commend Elle for despite some of it's narrative flaws.
The supporting cast is good as well as the fast paced script which will keep audiences on the edge of their seat. Whilst I wouldn't call this film a "comedy", dark humour is evident but I suppose that is up to interpretation.
Overall, Elle is Isabelle Huppert's moment and audiences are going to love her in Verhoeven's new movie.
