Review of Elle (2016) by Riley M — 09 May 2018
The first half was great - the main character is intriguing and Huppert deserves the praise for her acting skills. Her character is strong-willed and fairly amoral- unlike many female characters in films.
It drew me in. But then it goes downhill quickly. I almost think 'Showgirls' was better because at least it doesn't hide the fact that it's trashy male fantasy. Just because it's shot in a more sophisticated manner doesn't mean it's any more deep.
The women I watched this film with could all tell it was so obviously written by a man (and directed and produced by men BTW). Her sexuality is pure male fantasy - haven't we seen enough films portraying women through the male point of view? There is nothing ground breaking here.
