Review of Elle (2016) by Seraphic W — 25 Dec 2016
A pretentious, unfocused mess of a drawn-out project that, had it hit tension and intention, the delivered point would have been incredibly insightful and thought-provoking. Instead, it runs circles, chasing a stumped tail that seems to have been docked by its very creators - both on paper and visually.
A couple of assaults too many, violence quickly becomes gratuitous, there to serve no purpose other than to shock us into complying with the potential of a message that, offensively, is being sacrificed on the altar of Verhoeven's ab initio problematic vision.
On the plus side, Huppert is a thing to behold as this stone-hearted, corporate persona - even though the character itself oozes irredeemable distaste and provides the viewer with zero connective points.
Two stars for her and what this movie could have been.
