Review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) by Jiana W — 25 Jul 2011

Not as good as the first film but still decent because, hey, I love the Tudor family history. Blanchett is great as the feisty Queen Elizabeth. In this sequel, Elizabeth is forced to order the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, who has been busted trying to assassinate her. Mary's death gives the calculating Spaniards a reason to send their armies to England to "avenge" her. (None of these are spoilers if you know at least a little about the reign of Elizabeth.) Meanwhile, Elizabeth struggles with strong feelings toward a dashing adventurer/pirate, Walter Raleigh, who has his eye on Elizabeth's young servant and closest friend, Bess. It'd be a total soap opera if the plot centered on this semi-love triangle. Fortunately, this doesn't slow the story down and instead, actually adds to it because it plays up the distress, pressure, and fear that Elizabeth is feeling throughout the film. Not only is her kingdom in mortal danger from a powerful enemy, but her most trusted friend is getting it on with the man she loves. Double whammy.

The acting is great, as can be expected with a cast as lovely and strong as this. The costumes, of course, are extravagant and interesting to look at. The plot itself is also interesting. I love Cate Blanchett! What can't this dang woman do? I'll be on the lookout for a role that she sucks in.
