Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Brian S — 05 Dec 2011
A really intense and engaging cop thriller. Moura's narration gave it a little noir flavour, too, which fit rather nicely. the story is a great study of the kind of chops a person needs to not only excel but survive as one of Rio's elite cops.
giving a first person view to Nascimento was great too because it gives the story some personal perspective--yes these guys need to be hard as nails, but even a seasoned captain has a pregnant wife at home and deals with stress and anxiety.
the issues of law are quite fascinating as well, because of the constant corruption and power struggles. seemingly obvious or simple questions like "what are the laws, who makes them, and who enforces" are a lot harder with a lot more grey area.
overall a very solid film.
