Jon Favreau's festive fish-out-of-water tale sits at the top of boys and girls' "Best Christmas Film" lists everywhere for one reason and one reason only: Will Ferrell. When it comes to big kids, Ferrell is the biggest around, and there's no denying that Buddy The Elf suits the loveable oaf right down to the snow-frosted ground.
A quotable screenplay, formulaic narrative and the odd Christmas tune make for easy-going fun for viewers of all ages, and James Caan's grouchy workaholic is the perfect comedic counterpart for Ferrell's frivolous livewire. Favreau's film may be predictable and drizzled in sentiment, but it's also one hell of a lot of fun, not to mention laugh-out-loud funny and relentlessly entertaining.
