Review of Elf (2003) by Cork B — 02 Dec 2018
Elf has its charms. Ferrell does a really good job here playing straight man to a ridiculous plotline, which is what really makes this movie good. Newhart is fun too, and Steinbergen plays the stock goodly matron. Most of the rest of the cast is fairly cardboard cutout, and having James Caan reform in the spirit of Christmas seems a bit forced.
The ending is cheezy and the movie is not as charming as say, the Family Man it seems to want to take the joke a little bit farther than is actually funny sometimes.
