Review of Election (2005) by Robert H — 11 Jul 2008
I suppose one recipe for satire is to fill the screen with a set of characters so vile, selfish and arrogant (or stupid) that they become personifications of a flawed society. Election does just that - in the film, there is a single likeable character (the sister of the football jock).
That said, it is watchable and entertaining throughout, despite resorting to voiceover narration by four different characters (without any of the pizzazz that Scrubs used to invigorate this tired old technique).
The worst thing about the film is its ending, which is brutal and completely pessimistic. There is a somewhat weak attempt to sugarcoat the ending for the likeable character, but the coating does not quite convince.
All in all, a rather bittersweeit satire...
