Review of Election (2005) by Suzanne S — 25 Nov 2011
Astounded that so few of those who rate it highly even mention that it involves a teacher who seduces his student, loses his job, and blames the student. Maybe it's because I tried to watch it just a week after the Penn State scandal broke, but I find nothing funny in that abuse of power and in what is, realistically, statutory rape. And, ultimately, it has nothing to do with the major plot. It and the other gratuitous and irrelevant sex scenes are just included to earn it an R rating.
The film doesn't know what it's about. Is it a satire of the election process? Is it a dark comedy about a man's moral and ethical breakdown? In either case, many people who rate it highly call it an "adult satire." Then perhaps it should have been set in an adult world, not the teenage world of high school. If they wanted to set it in the high school, then the "adult" content should have been eliminated.
Or maybe it's set in a high school because it's so sophomoric.
