Review of El Topo (1970) by Jason G — 11 Nov 2007
Wow...
What can I say? I like Jodorowsky's other work well enough. I'm a big fan of his Graphic Novels "METABARONS" and "THE INCAL" so after years and years of trying to track down this "seminal" work on disk or tape.... I was happy to finally see it available a few months ago.
Sadly.....
If I had made this film frame for frame as a "film student" I would have been laughed at and spent my entire life searching fruitlessly for work in film-making.
Instead... Jodorowsky cobbles together this laughable disasterpiece and everybody goes nuts for his genius...
Please!
The first third of the film is compelling because you want to see where it's going but then the whole thing just falls to shit.
Maybe this movie was out of circulation just the right amount of a time to facilitate it's "cult-status" but I thought it was horrible.
I might draw the ire of film historians and avant-garde wanna be film makers everywhere but the reality is...
EL TOPO is the cinematic equivilent of "the emperor's new clothes".
Avoid at all costs.
