Review of El Topo (1970) by Ryan B — 29 Jul 2009
Pulling no punches, this film advances graphic symbolism in a depiction of a man's struggle for peace of mind. The atmosphere is surreal. Metaphors are as plentiful as ants at a picnic. I was moved by some of the imagery whereas a lot of it seemed labored.
Often, the film wants to shock for the sake of being shocking. Admittedly, several of the images have stayed with me, just like the disturbing images in early Bunuel. Perhaps I'm too hasty to write it all off.
