Review of El Topo (1970) by Rich T — 24 Sep 2010
A tremendous biblical allegory. In one of the most famous one-on-ones with Jodorowsky, he says that in life we are surrounded by both beautiful and terrible things. To show these things is to open our eyes - as we watch the familiar figure of a gunslinger on a horse seep into the first wideshot of the desert, we see him in black, we see his child pure and innocent.
Soon, the innocence is destroyed as the boy is handed a revolver. It is a cruel reality check of the bloodthirst of the average filmgoer. I believe everyone should watch this - it's one of the most important landmarks in cinematic history.
Midnight will never be the same again.
