Review of El Topo (1970) by Jason J — 29 Apr 2011
A surreal blend of religion and westerns, this film follows a gunfighter who wishes to become the best and the aftermath of his quest. The film is split into two parts that loosely parallel events from the Old and New Testaments.
The first part deals with El Topo's quest to defeat the four greatest gunfighters in the land. The second part deals with the same yet quite different El Topo as he attempts to dig a tunnel from underneath the earth to a neighboring town to free a tribe of deformed outcasts.
Like Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2, both parts have their own strengths and weaknesses. I found that the first part was visually the most intriguing while the second part had a more solid story. Overall, the film is a Western whose style trumps the somewhat predictable story.
