Review of El Mariachi (1993) by Daniel W — 14 Feb 2008
I didn't realise that this film was in latin american/spanish and was initially disappointed with it being subtitled. It didn't take long to get into though and once I was, I loved it. Shot on a shoe string budget, Rodriguez has created a masterpiece here. I found myself completely unaware that I was reading subtitles after 10 minutes as I was so engrossed in the film. The storyline is a rather simple tale of mistaken identity but El Mariachi provides a very solid foundation on which to build the future trilogy. I also liked that, as an extra on the DVD, Robert Rodriguez explains how he made various parts of the film in his 10 minute film school. Very good and worth at least one look for any film fan.
Similar in quality to Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino's debut movie.
