Review of El Cid (1961) by Cary M — 09 Feb 2008
With large battle scenes, this epic probably would not play well on a small TV screen. Maybe it will have a rising reputation in the age of the 64 inch television. I saw a screening of it at AFI Silver.
It is of course long and plodding, yet very well filmed. I would kill for some of Sophia Loren's lipsticks in this movie. The absolute last shot of the film is a remarkable shot that this film fan considered made the 3 hour running time worth it.
I've probably already talked it up too much and it is nearly a flash, but my cinematic eyes felt a sense of legend was achieved at full gallop.
