Review of El Cantante (2006) by Rebecca M — 30 Dec 2007
Aspects of the way this movie was put together stylistically annoyed me...It felt like a slapped together music video at times and the way scenes were spliced together did not always make sense. I do think the point was to give the "essence" of Lavoe instead of a linear plot.
The music is wonderful, and the acting is pretty good but the main characters are rather abrasive and unlikeable with little human interest or compassion thrown in for them, in my opinion. I was left with a sense of deep sadness despite the happy beat of salsa music.
Lavoe's life and that of his wife were train wrecks. The movie does show that a more serious and quite troubled soul heart was underneath all the glitz for Lavoe. He was the ultimate example of being in bondage to do his own will.
If only he could have found some sort of freedom.
