Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Tara B — 02 Aug 2018
TL;DR, Between this and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? Probably Fallen Kingdom.
I myself am around the age group of the characters in this movie and found nothing outside of the school relatable at all. While the small details are thoughtful, like teachers trying to using slang that kids use, and how the kids behave in assemblies, but blowjobs and sending nudes seem just a bit farfetched for 13-14 year olds.
Personally, I expected the movie to deal with depression, anxiety, etc. etc. What it is in my opinion is a lackluster protagonist having a very unique journey; Seniors aren't likely to become her best friends(who are promptly thrown aside and never spoken of again), I doubt one of those friends would try to make an emotionally-scarring move on her(once again, almost never spoken of again nor traumatizing her), and socially awkward/unstable kids are very unlikely to run a daily video series, let alone a kid her age do one at all.
Furthermore, this movie has virtually no plot; no character development. One second it turns into a romance cliche, the next it takes an out-of-nowhere turn to break the main character out of her undeveloped shell, then it takes an unnecessary turn to give it an unrealistic R-Rating.
