Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Patrick B — 04 Aug 2018
Where to start with this movie. Should I start with the accurate portrayal of the ambiguous effect of social media saturation on youth? Should I start with the realistic depiction of sexuality among the age group? Should I start with how proud I was that Bo Burnham incorporated a "soft boy" and the toxic masculinity and aggressive sexuality rampant among young males, but didn't use it as the fulcrum point of Kayla's growth? Or how they bucked the trend in coming of age stories of there being a traumatizing/horribly embarrassing event that Kayla would have to overcome and instead made her life, in broad strokes, rather average? Or the parallels between Kayla growing up and her father learning his role in her life? Or the fantastic acting of Elsie Fisher?
Ignore the R rating and see this with your middle schooler. Its important.
I like it the most though for the principle dabbing.
