Albeit, a slight disappointment from the marvellous Ms Emma Thompson, however a failure it is not. Strong performances from this glittering cast sparkled through the 108 minutes leaving you in awe of its cast.

Effie Gray tells the misfortunate true story of her relationship with Art critic, John Ruskin. There relationship enters turmoil after Ruskin refuses to share intimacy with his new wife. Also, under the influence of Ruskins mother (Julie Walters), the new Mrs John Ruskin is forced to find solace in characters such as Lady Eastlake (Thompson). With the strength found in herself and support of her friends and sister, she becomes on of the first women in history to seek annulment making this a great feminist tale of love, loss and freedom.

Effie Grays pacing at times can come across as a little slow for it can drag during parts of this film. Thompson's screenplay, not her best but still watchable. The intensity of the emotional feelings of Effie Gray are shown conspicuously thorough out providing one Fanning's best roles to date.

Overall, this is no masterpiece but is definitely still worth a try if you're into period drama.
