Review of Edmond (2006) by Miguel A — 25 Aug 2011
This is the fifth Stuart Gordon film I've seen and it is in stark contrast to the majority of his other work. Most notably this isn't based on anything by H.P. Lovecraft. Secondly, while there is some blod shed, this never goes to the excesses of Re-Animator or even From Beyond.
The violence here is subtle. It doesn't shy away from it but it isn't the center of this movie either. Instead this film is more character driven and held together by its ideas about violence.
William H. Macy stars as Edmond Burke, in this screenplay adapted from David Mamets play. Edmond is bored with his white collar job and his loveless marriage. One night he snaps and decides to leave, throwing himself head first into the seedy New york sex trade.
Going to stripclubs, peepshows and massage parlours, whilst embracing the racism and violence that is boiling over within him. A good 'man on the edge' film that features several small cameo appearance from people such as Joe Mantegna, Julia Stiles, Mena Suvari and Denise Richards.
Some reviewers have complained that this movie is boring, and I would have to disagree with that. I thought that Macy's performance was really good and managed to keep my interest throughout the film.
While not a perfect work either, this is still a very good film from Stuart Gordon. Recommended to fans of his, or man on the edge films in general.
