Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Mykel F — 30 Apr 2010
I didn't really expect to like this one, so it was a surprise. Depp is as crazily immersive as always, albeit a little over the top. Still fun to watch. And you know, it's too bad that Tim Burton doesn't show this kind of honed restraint anymore. So for that I give it credit. But for me, the film lacks depth, or something. The whole movie, from scene to scene, just feels like a series of goofy gimmicks for our amusement-- "watch this weirdo make a fool of himself THIS time!"-- rather than engage us on any kind of real or serious level. You can have quality comedy with depth, and especially with a film like this (that comes so close to exploring those other parts), it's particularly frustrating.
I just re-watched "The Insider" and "Insomnia," which I hardly remembered, but I can't review them on here because I'd seen them before I began my account. That's my rule. Oh well.
Upcoming: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Iron Man 2, The Hangover, and maybe the 2nd and 3rd Die Hard movies. (Kim and I are planning a Die Hard marathon sometime soon, and I haven't seen the middle two).
Until then.
