Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Jeff B — 01 Sep 2010
I really liked this film. It's bizarre yet grounded in reality, and Depp does a tremendous job as a guy who's just in love with film and doesn't really get how to make a good one. He's more interested in the result than the process, and there's something magical about that.
He doesn't get that he's a tremendous failure (in one sense) because he's got these movies "in the can." Martin Landau is tremendous as Bela Lugosi, so it's no surprise that his relationship with Ed Wood takes up most of the picture.
It's clear why he won Best Supporting Actor that year. Bill Murray and Jeffrey Jones were also pretty spectacular in their limited roles--Jones especially.
