Review of Ed Wood (1994) by David L — 02 Jan 2017
A somewhat strange spectacle which depicts the key events of the unsuccessful career of the film maker Edward D Wood Junior who is determined to create a successful movie off the back of his own perverse inspiration, but with no source of funding to initiate proceedings.
Johnny Depp is the unsurprising lead in this Tim Burton creation which always guarantees to add some star quality through his comical yet sinister approach. Unfortunately for me, I had never previously heard of the character he portrayed and it wasn't until I reached the end of the film that I discovered this was actually based on real life people, which somewhat detracts from the value that the story may have upon the viewer.
Nevertheless, the cast which also included a very camp Bill Murray, together with the pure amusement and randomness of the scripting simply added to my intrigue as to where this was all heading. Not necessarily a film I'd watch again in a hurry, but can no doubt entertain in a uniquely peculiar way of its own, a bit like most other Tim Burton productions.
