Review of Eaten Alive (1976) by Paul J — 06 Aug 2010
This is one insane movie. Reality has a way of seeping into Hooper's film sets. Actor, Neville was seriously drunk while shooting and his psychopathic portrayal blurs the lines of reality and fiction.
Supposedly, he brutally beat some of the actors on set. The beatings and misogynistic ways are disturbingly real, sick and downright sleazy. Even the little child being chased by the crocodile is kinda fucked up.
This isn't exactly a quality film, however it does have a certain atmosphere that's visually haunting (the colors!) and certainly adds to the overall dirty feeling. Also, the supporting cast (including a very young Robert Englund - who is surprisingly articulate during the extras) are all solid and lend the film some legitimacy.
On a sidenote: the plethora of old-school and poisonous smoke machines apparently made the entire cast and crew violently ill after shooting. Their pneumonia lasted for months.
