Review of Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) by Lyndon G — 19 Dec 2007
When this was over I felt it must be rather a Western product of Taiwan. This makes sense considering Ang Lee has been working in the West ever since, and in fact (checking Wikipedia), it seems his two earlier movies were filmed in the US.
Anyway, my point is I didn't feel that detracted at all from the story or the movie: why should it? I also think Eat Drink Man Woman is rewatchable and I would like to see it again. The story of the master chef and his three adult daughters works both as a fairytale and a piece of quiet and sweet observations.
In some way it's like the movie Chocolat but less sappy, more refined, and come to think of it, more French.
