Review of Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) by Thomas L — 08 Jul 2009
This is the film that put Ang Lee's career on the map, and it's easy to see why. For one, it's delightful. The father and the three daughters are all so well drawn that soon you feel like you know them.
The premise is hardly unique: Tradition versus modernity. But then again, no premise is unique anymore. The trick is to present it in a unique way, and if you can do it in a way personal to you, all the better.
Here you've got a father who's a master chef and represents Taiwanese culture and tradition. His three daughters, however, couldn't be bothered. They each have their own complicated lives.
Then again, so does the father. That none of his daughters consider him long enough to see the kind of life he's leading until the very end is how Ang Lee drives his message home.
