Review of Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) by Sabra E — 06 Jun 2011
This film had so much heart and personality, I watched it like a third season soap opera, bawling in need of a hug when it was over. It was unpredictable too, with left field plot twists calling fouls on the senses. This is Ang Lee's perfect child with radiant eyes and a strong cardiovascular pulse.
An aging father is a brilliant career chef losing his sense of taste, the sisters of various ages and positions in their lives are spaced and embellished in clean simplicity. Love and fate, the filial daughter, the reality of death and divorce, family bonding rituals, the gauntlet of coupling. There is nothing wrong with this movie. It's been a while since I could say that.
