Review of Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) by Levana A — 14 May 2014
The film that gave Ang Lee international acclaim. It celebrates food, love and sex. It's also about a generational gap. The father changes with modernity (much like the city itself is under transition).
His three daughters are colorfully written, each with their own unique dramas. The subtlety in the story is beautiful and typically Taiwanese. The restraint the film shows builds to a cathartic finish.
It may feel a bit soap-operatic but the story is heart-felt with characters that stay with you. Refreshingly, there are some twist and turns in the plot that are unexpected as well.
