Review of Easy Rider (1969) by Samantha B — 04 Apr 2010
Although this hasn't aged well, you could immediately see why this has achieved cult status. This film worked a bit like a documentary in showing the way that people were dropping out of the mainstream in the late 1960s America.
It seemed an honest account of the problems in doing this - the lack of acceptance, the bad trips, the poverty and the isolation is evident. Jack Nicholson was excellent - the first time I've really seen him do any character other than Jack Nicholson.
Hopper is quite good, too - I could feel myself getting nervous every time he met someone new, wondering how he would cause problems. I thought that his character was ironic - he was a dropout who couldn't make it work with other dropouts, I think.
