The message of freedom attempted and lost in an oppressive society of fascist conformism is angry, spiteful, and anvilicious. Still, the cinematography and visuals of "Easy Rider" is some of the tightest I've ever seen.

The need of a story isn't warranted, as the characters we're given (who can forget the backstabbing of Jack Nicholson's character by society?) and the landscape of the midwest US already seems to tell one in a poetic way (I love the shot of a mountain that looks like a protruding hitchhiker's thumb; an implication that the desire for freedom is built into the very genes of the land.

).
