Review of Easy Rider (1969) by Matt P — 29 May 2011

There aren't many films that I would classify simply as "cool," but "Easy Rider" is one of them. In fact, I think this movie epitomizes the stereotypical sub-genre of "cool" movies.

Back in the lare 60s when movies were beginning to become more risky and controversial, it was sort hard to determine what movies were depicting reality for how it really was and which ones were just for the sake of having violence.

"Easy Rider" is a movie that succeeds in being both a classic, and a historical piece of art. The film centers around two hippy-bikers and their adventure across the states as they travel from Las Angeles to New Orleans.

The two bikers, Wyatt(Peter Fonda), and Billy(Dennis Hopper) have two distinct split personalities , but what they both share is the will to peacefully protest. Their bikes are filled with cocaine, and the mere idea sounds risky--not for these two motorcyclists.

They're on a hunt for America, and what the two quickly learn is that down in the southern states of America, society isn't as accepting. But these two aren't looking to be violently rebellious.

Along the way they pick up hick lawyer George(Jack Nicholson) who's just looking for a good time. The film is generally all about their mishaps and troubles along the way, that ultimately in the end spells the closure to a lost era.

Films like "Easy Rider" are rare, they could never be made again. Dennis Hopper(who also directed the film) captured a time where America was beginning to question itself in terms of values and logic The 60s was the stir of the Vietnam war, and everyone was angry.

But here, the two hippies aren't looking for any trouble. It's what they merely symbolize that causes society to put their guard up and feel threatened--ultimately leading to a tragic ending. So along with being gritty and realistic, with the iconic southern racism commonly concentrated on race, the movie also has a strong feeling of soul and heart.

The soundtrack is just great to listen to. While we cruise by the vivid sights of different states, such songs as Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" never sounded so cool. "Easy Rider" is very important to America and to society.
