Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Phil C — 19 Mar 2010
Like drinking vodka you have to be in the right mood to watch and fully appreciate this. It's a very subtle film that needs to be slowly sipped and savoured to get the full effect. Cronenberg makes London look good while not denying that visually it is a city of bricks and rain.
The plot explores the Russian underworld and the many rituals - such as the meaning behind their tattoos. And it's Watts' everyday midwife that finds herself drawn into this other world like Alice.
There are hints of The Godfather, though it's only half the length. And the cast are fantastic. For a small British film it's really rather good.
