Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Hari A — 17 Jul 2012
A russian gangster flick that glorifies the russian presence in the United Kingdom but the movie falls short on delivering what was promised. It tells the story of a Nikolai Luzhin's (Viggo Mortenson) rise to power in circumstances that define the fall of the current boss (Armin Mueller-Stahl). This plot is explained through the story of a midwife (Naomi Watts) looking into the identity of a russian teen. The movie starts of slow, explaining the intricacies involved in working with the Russian mafia. This part is well done. However, the second half feels rushed and incomplete.
Praising the Godfatheresque pace of the movie in the first half, if the movie would have been given more time to evolve in the second half, this would have been a definite classic.
