Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Amy D — 03 Sep 2012
Very close to a perfect movie. Traditionally suspenseful and efficiently edited. Graphically violent but necessary in setting the tone: The Russian mafia is scary. It's a short movie, but it establishes character and emotion quickly.
Viggo Mortensen is very convincing as a Russian gangster and although I don't think he'll win an Oscar, his nomination for this role is warranted, he commands every scene he's in. Eastern Promises achieves in 1hr 40mins what Godfather does in 3hrs.
