Review of East of Eden (1955) by Carlos M — 29 Sep 2012
I watched it too soon after reading the novel, and was unable to judge it on its own merits. It's not a terrible movie, but it's a terrible adaptation of the source material. I'm not sure how one could adapt the novel, because it's not like the first three parts are necessary to understand the plot.
But repetition and generations are two important themes that the movie couldn't really touch on because it didn't have the scope of the novel. I did love Kate and her brothel. She was cool and lovely.
