Review of East of Eden (1955) by Lindsey J — 07 Mar 2011

I originally saw this movie ten years ago. I was so enthralled with Giant and Rebel Without a Cause, my expectations were through the roof for this one. I remember East of Eden being good, but it didn't have the same visceral reaction that the previous two had.

Fast forward to two days ago. I watched this movie again to see if my initial assessment was wrong. It was. I really enjoyed it in my second viewing. I loved the parallels to the story of Cane and Abel.

It is also a study in great acting. While Dean puts in the best performance, that shouldn't take away from any of the other ones but in by Julie Harris, Burl Ives, etc. Enjoyable film.
