It's a fun entertainment with adrenaline. It's also a homage to the found footage genre, especially "Chronicle" for kids and family being combined with E.T. meeting "Super 8" in story with a similar tone to "The Last Mimzy." But it seems that those films were being echoed by the titular/main focus character. Sure it sounds like it's an act of derivation - borrowing elements from other sources - but they were being "echoed" like how Echo echoed random tones he hears.

Just three years ago, "Super 8" was like this when it was a homage to the sci-fi genre in the late 70s and early 80s, especially "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." So why can't Echo be praised the same way when it doubles the latter by adding a homage to the found footage genre? I don't see anything bad about not being original as long the film resulted being good and uses those elements the best way wisely. (Okay now I'm seeing why after hearing it, but I'm still sticking to my thought.).

"Earth to Echo" is probably the best found footage film I've seen - even though it wasn't entirely when there were shots that were just filmed outside of the format - with a need to watch more films with the similar format, including "Paranormal Activity" someday. (B+).
