Review of Earth (1999) by John B — 20 Jul 2007
Epic, but suffers from wooden, border-line clichées (for example, the confrontation between a Sikh and a British colonial official at a dinner party). Mehta seems to subscribe to the PC Indian post-independence narrative which places the blame for communal violence squarely on the shoulders of British colonialism.
Sometimes, Mehta's determination to get her politics across in the movie make for weak cinema.
