Review of Earth (1999) by Rebecca G — 11 Jun 2008
This is an incredibly sad film. Be warned: it is one of those annoying movies where the dialogue is far too quiet to hear, and the music much louder (a pet hate of mine), though arguably the music is the greatest beauty of the piece anyway.
However, I applaud any credible attempt to tell the tale of India's Partition, a tale which should be told and retold as many times as possible, until the lessons have been learnt. The alternative viewpoint that is offered, that of Lenny, the lame Parsi girl, is an interesting one, and the personal relationships, as ever in this kind of story, offer a way into 'the bigger picture', the unthinkable carnage going on around.
It is emotionally draining, as it should be, and uncomfortable watching. I'm not sure I'd like to watch it again any time soon, but I'm glad it exists, and that I did watch it.
