Review of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2011) by Aaron R — 05 Jul 2011
Low on budget and thrills, this movie has the feel of a tv pilot for a show that would have been syndicated in the 90s after Forever Knight. The premise certainly has promise, creating an interesting alternate New Orleans where then undead and the living walk side by side.
Having said that, the movie never quite pulls off the trick of making us believe that this is anything other than a comic book world unlike say Blade or the X-Men movies where there is a tangible sense of reality to them.
Brandon Roush is so much a modern day reincarnation of Christopher Reeve its scary. The rest of the cast is extremely flat, especially fellow Superman Returns alumnus Sam Huntington who plays a weak one-note comedy sidekick that is amazingly worse then his Jimmy Olsen.
The low-budget approach to the FX, heavily reliant on practical and make-up effects, is actually quite refreshing from the typical CG fest youâ(TM)d get from the SyFy movie of the week. This is the movie strongest element and creatures like the uber-zombie and the movieâ(TM)s final baddie generate allot of interest for the creature feature fans.
Not terrible, but not terribly good.
