Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Lanre O — 25 Jan 2018
As much as I'm not a huge fan of war films, I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. However, it isn't a feel-good patriotic story of heroism. Rather, it's a raw story of trying to survive one more day.
Christopher Nolan's latest big-budget offering relies more on sound effects, background music, and scenery to tell the story as opposed to long stretches of dialogue and profound character development.
Yet, I probably could have watched the film with no sound and have understood a lot of what was conveyed. The story itself consists of three interwoven parts, which, in some ways, play out as haphazardly as the historic events themselves.
Ultimately, while this isn't a film that will leave viewers with an abundance of warm fuzzy feelings, it is a brilliant example of the power of human perseverance when under (literal) trial by fire.
