Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Spencer D — 30 Dec 2017
I have three critiques of this film.
1) The nonlinear storyline is jarring. After thinking about it, I believe this was done because the filmmakers wanted to tell each subplot at the same time for a more balanced experience. Regardless, it took away from the film.
2) To try and add tension to scenes, they implemented a choppy score and it was more annoying than anything else.
3) This is a minor criticism in relation to how it effected the film, but intentionally making a war PG-13 is compromising quality for profits. There's a huge difference in box office results if you get the rating down to a PG-13, but making the film R-Rated would have helped underscore the terror of the situation.
I enjoy Christopher Nolan's work, but this could have been much better. 6/10.
