A film that tells a relatively simple and straightforward story extremely well. Only one segment (by sea) regularly uses dialog, meaning that oftentimes the film rests on the casts' nonverbal physical acting.

Whitehead and Barnard particularly excel in this regard, and Styles proves he has talents outside of singing. The nonlinear progression of the three parts of the story is the one major way Nolan plays with the narrative, and successfully relies mostly on stunning visuals to sell the scope and harsh reality of the story.

It also manages to toe the line of not being a gory spectacle without shying away from how harsh an brutal war can be.
