Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Bruce T — 28 Jul 2017
Such glowing reviews, but I was disappointed.
Visually excellent, but I thought the editor deserves an award for worst editing in a major film; disjointed and confusing, jumping randomly from daytime to nighttime and back for no discernible reason. I had to look up the story to find out that the evacuation actually took 8 days.
Some of the special effects were impressive, but how did that Spitfire that runs out of fuel at low altitude magically remain in the air for a half hour or so until all the boats had left the area? And how did a ditched Spitfire with 1500lb of engine and prop in its nose - 1/4 of its total weight - float for many minutes flat on the water?
Kenneth Branagh's talents were wasted with multiple scenes of his character just staring into the distance, giving no clue as to what he was doing to coordinate the evacuation efforts ashore.
