Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Tristan B — 23 Jul 2017
This film by Christopher Nolan is a wonderfully accurate depiction of the events that happened on Dunkirk's shores. This film is shot beautifully with breathtaking cinematography and visual effects.
The dogfights and all the explosions in this movie seemed real and that's because most of it was actually practical effects as Nolan used thousands of extras and real minesweepers and a destroyer ship for this film.
Hans Zimmer once again brings it with a fantastic score for Dunkirk. The sound effects in this film were also fantastic and so realistic as well. Christopher Nolan's movies however are supposed to look good and sound good but what about the narrative? This is where Dunkirk is lacking because the narrative and character development is weak in this film.
You follow four storylines throughout this film and all of them are compelling but none of them are developed enough for me to be memorable. The Dunkirk story is an amazing one and this film depicts this event as accurate as possible, but it can't be put in the same category as films such as Saving Private Ryan.
This film is strictly about the event of Dunkirk and some people might not care about the lack of characterization and love this film, but I expected and wanted more from this ambitious but not lackluster film.
