Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Mac M — 25 Jul 2017
Saw Dunkirk in IMAX tonight.
I enjoyed Nolan's take on it. It was thoughtful and interesting the way he had multiple perspectives overlapping and interweaving within the same events that were unfolding.
I can see where the film isn't going to be for everyone. There's a lack of your typical linear plotline with a singular hero and a notable villain. Not much dialogue.
It's beautifully shot, however, and manages to convey both the awful hopelessness of war and the stoic determination of doing what must be done. It manages to punch you in the gut without the same level of graphic depiction of Saving Private Ryan.. but there is still all the terror, joy, desperation, salvation, guilt and heroism you'd expect from the genre. It comes in a more carefully crafted and artful package than you might expect though, with the main character being the war itself and being presented to us in a non linear timeline.
So, maybe not for everyone. I enjoyed it.
83/100.
