Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Sam I — 21 Jul 2017
For those expecting a wide sweeping look at the events of Dunkirk look elsewhere, Nolan has crafted an intense 3 piece look at the event from a few pilots perspective, a few soldiers on the beach, and an elder man with two young men coming with the rest of the small ships to save those on the beach.
This is all about the action and the immersion had through incredible cinematography. The added grandeur of the 70mm IMAX help make it all the intense. While I did not much care for Hans Zimmer's score for this film it does add an immediacy to the action of the film ramping of the film to it's crescendos.
The acting is very strong throughout although for me the standouts were Kenneth Branagh's Commander, Mark Rylance's Mr. Dawson, and the mere presence of Tom Hardy's Farrier in the air. If anything the most disappointing parts of the film belong to Fion Whitehead's character's journey trying anyway possible to get aboard a ship.
In all an intense ride of a film well worth seeing on the biggest screen possible provided you do not have an aversion to ticking.
