Review of Dumplings (2004) by Katie S — 15 May 2009
Beautifully shot arthouse movie of a quite unique kind. It's sensuous to the point of being visceral: every gasp, breath and crunch seems amplified. The colours seem hyper-real. You really can almost taste the dumplings.
And while you're lulling yourself into a false sense of security about how interesting and elegant this is, about the nuanced, subtle, superb performances of the two female leads...
...the film makes no apologies for its central conceit. No punches are pulled. Now I'm not one for spoilers, I really believe you should generally see films without knowing what's coming. But this may be an exception. This is not for the faint-hearted.
