Review of Dumplin' (2018) by Jo-Ropke — 20 Apr 2019
Dump this movie...
I saw this movie while on an airplane for 9 hours. Otherwise I would not think about spending valuable time on this kind of predictable stuff. There was this 1 thing that struck me the most: the lack of real human physical emotion between the mother and her daughter. There's this one scene in which a normal parent would not recite those typical Hollywood flawless sentences but would just close his/her kid in his/her arms and hug it firmly. No words necessary. A same scene comes to mind actually in another movie (no spoiler ahead) where the son has come out as gay (Love, Simon) and there is again this weird, rational dialogue between mother and son, where the mother is telling her son how much she loves him blah blah blah... but, well, she just tells him, sitting across from him in the living room. No physical emotion whatsoever! All the time I was thinking: Come on woman, just give your son a hug, give him a kiss... These so called heart warming movies with messages of love and understanding and acceptance... there all just fake crap. Nothing realistic. At least not the kind of reality I want to live in, or create for my kids.
